The Stanford Geriatric Education Center (SGEC) provides a variety of multidisciplinary ethnogeriatric programs and curriculum resource materials to educate health care professionals on the cultural issues associated with aging and health. The SGEC promotes cultural sensitivity and cultural competence to improve the quality of health care for the rapidly growing population of ethnic minority elders in the United States.

Funded continuously since 1987 by the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, the original core faculty members of the SGEC coined the word “ethnogeriatrics”. The SGEC is currently a cooperative project between Stanford University School of Medicine, San Jose State University, On Lok Senior Health Services, Laguna Honda Hospital, and Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, Inc.
